Abstract
True cyst of the spleen is a rare benign cystic lesion. The pathogenesis of this benign cystic lesion is obscure. Coelomic invagination in developmental stage, accompanied squamous metaplasia, is suggested as possible pathogenic mechanism. A trauma is considered as an importent etiologic factor.
The authors experienced a case of epidermoid cyst of the spleen in twenty seven years old female patient. She had been suffered, because of a slowly growing mass on left upper quadrant of abdomen. A diagnosis of splenic cyst was made in preoperative study including UGIS, abdominal ultrasonography and abdominal CAT scanning. On explorative laparatomy, there was an adult head sized cystic mass in the splenic hilar region. Pathological examination, this cystic mass was filled with dark brown granular serous fluid. The inner surface was dark brown and dirty with numerous tan brown trabeculae. Microscopically, this cyst was lined by simple cuboidal epithelium with focal stratified squamous epithelium. Dense fibrous tissue was lay down beneath the covering epithelium.
